SUMMARY:Book Talk - Twice Removed by Zee Lacson
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate local author\, Zee Lacson\, and Filipinx American History Month at Restoried Bookshop! \nWe’ll be discussing her YA novel\, Twice Removed- available in-store during the event. Zee will be reading from her novel\, answering questions\, and signing copies of the book. This event is organized in partnership with our friends at Veloria Coffee who will be joining us with a special beverage making it’s debut at this book talk! \nLocal author x Filipinx American History Month x Coffee x Spooky Season = An event not to be missed! \nHelp us plan for the event by selecting a free ticket below so we can make sure we have enough books and seats for everyone. \n As part of an immigrant family\, Jay has never felt like he belonged in his hometown of New Orleans. In the summer before his senior year in high school\, he thinks things are finally going his way when Maya\, the half-Filipino girl in class he’s had a crush on\, starts talking to him. \nBut Maya has secrets. And the more time they spend together\, the further he’s pulled into a world of magic and superstition. When a generations-old family curse is revealed\, Jay has to find a way to stop this winged\, vampiric monster before sunset on Maya’s 18th birthday.\nIf he doesn’t\, his new girlfriend might kill him.\nOr worse\, he’ll have to kill her. \n— \nZee Lacson\, a first generation immigrant\, has lived half her life in one country and the other half in another. Born and raised in Manila\, Philippines with her grandparents\, father\, and twin brothers\, she now enjoys the small town life in Illinois with her husband and twin sons.  \nShe has had practice in many professions. Engineer. Educator. Photographer. Artist. Storyteller.  \nThe Woolgathering Trilogy is her first completed story. Reverie was published in 2020 and was a finalist in the 2021 Illinois Author Project. Revenant\, its sequel\, was released the following year. The trilogy was completed in 2023 with the final book\, Réveil.  \nTwice Removed was published on Philippine Independence Day in 2024 and won a BIBA (Best Indie Book Award) that year.  \nShe’s never been a big believer of monsters hiding in the dark but she eats lots of garlic and will sleep with a little light on. Just in case.  \nZeeLacson.com

SUMMARY:Let's Talk Comics! With Wendy Xu and Bianca Xunise
DESCRIPTION:Restoried Bookshop is excited to host Wendy Xu and Bianca Xunise to talk about their work and geek out over their comics! Join us Saturday\, October 11th at 12pm to meet Wendy and Bianca\, hear about their work\, ask some questions\, and maybe even get something signed. \nWe will have copies of their books available for purchase at the event. \n\nWendy Xu is a bestselling\, award-nominated Brooklyn-based illustrator and comics artist. \nShe is the creator of INFINITY PARTICLE (2023\, HarperCollins/Quilltree)\, TIDESONG (2021 HarperCollins/Quilltree) and co-creator of MOONCAKES\, a young adult fantasy graphic novel published in 2019 from Oni Press. Her work has been featured in various places on the internet including Catapult\, Barnes & Noble Sci-fi/Fantasy\, and Tor.com. She loves obsessing over the perfect line\, making matcha lattes\, and art history. \nYou can find more art on her instagram: @artofwendyxu; on twitter: @angrygirLcomics; or bluesky: @wendyxu \n \nBianca Xunise’s work has been regarded as ‘gripping narrative[s]\, relatable situations\, and evocative artwork with an aesthetic that oozes with late-1970s zine flair.’ With two Ignatz and an NAACP Award under their belt\, Bianca enjoys being a voice for those who march to the beat of their own drum and hopes that their comics are comforting to those who feel like they don’t fit in. Bianca continues to bring rock n roll to illustrative life\, collaborating with legends from Blondie to Bauhaus. When Bianca isn’t doodling away\, they are usually at an underground DIY punk show dancing with friends by the Chicago riverside. \n

SUMMARY:July - Special Session Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We are adding in a Special Session Book Club for July! Our past couple of book club votes have showed a strong crew of folks eager to bookclub Unassimilable by Bianca Mabute-Louie. We’ve been wanting to read it too\, so we’re opening a nonfiction special session book club for anyone interested in digging into this diasporic manifesto with us! We’ll be gathering the afternoon of July 26th at 3pm at the bookshop. Feel free to bring a snack or beverage. \nAs always\, the only prerequisite to joining this club is purchasing your copy here\, in-person at the shop. Though RSVP’s help us plan\, so please scoop up one of the free tickets below and don’t forget to show up for the conversation! \nMore about Unassimilable:\nA scholar and activist’s brilliant socio-political examination of Asian Americans who refuse to assimilate and instead build their own belonging on their own terms outside of mainstream American institutions. \nIn this hard-hitting and deeply personal book\, a combination of manifesto and memoir\, scholar\, sociologist\, and activist Bianca Mabute-Louie transforms the ways we understand race\, class\, citizenship\, and the concept of assimilation and its impact on Asian American communities from the nineteenth century to present day. \nUNASSIMILABLE opens with a focus on the San Gabriel Valley (SGV)\, the first Asian ethnoburb in Los Angeles County and in the nation\, where she grew up. A suburban neighborhood with a conspicuous Asian immigrant population\, SGV thrives not because of its assimilation into Whiteness\, but because of its unapologetic catering to its immigrant community. \nMabute-Louie then examines “Predominantly White Institutions With A lot of Asians” and how these institutions shape the racial politics of Asian Americans and Asian internationals\, including the fight against affirmative action and the fight for ethnic studies. She moves on to interrogate the role of the religion\, showing how the immigrant church is a sanctuary even as it is an extension of colonialism and the American Empire. In the book’s conclusion\, Bianca looks to the future\, boldly proposing a reconsideration of the term Asian American for a new label that better clarifies who Asians in America are today. \nUNASSIMILABLE offers a radical vision of Asian American political identity informed by a refusal of Whiteness and collective care for each other. It is a forthright declaration against assimilation and in service of cross-racial\, anti-imperialist solidarity and revolutionary politics. Scholarly yet accessible\, informative and informed\, this book is a major addition to Ethnic Studies and American Studies.

SUMMARY:July Final Fridays Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Final Friday’s Book Club as we dive into The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez!! This fantasy novel has been a steadily popular one with our community since we opened and if you know someone who has read it\, they’ve likely also made you want to pick it up too. We can’t wait to read through and talk about this one with y’all in community. It does come in at a respectable 544 pages so I’m suggesting we do a check in for the July 25th book club and see where everyone’s at and discuss from there\, then do a final deep dive at our August book club gathering once we’ve all finished. Though if you think we’ve got it and can finish the book by the 25\, reach out and let me know! \nAs always\, the only prerequisite to getting into this club is purchase your book in-person at our shop and showing up for the book club. Please RSVP by getting one of the free tickets below\, this really does help us plan! \n  \nA little more about The Spear Cuts Through Water:\nTwo warriors shepherd an ancient god across a broken land to end the tyrannical reign of a royal family in this epic fantasy from the author of The Vanished Birds. \n“A beguiling fantasy not to be missed.”—Evelyn Skye\, New York Times bestselling author of The Crown’s Game \nWINNER OF THE IAFA CRAWFORD AWARD • WINNER OF THE BRITISH FANTASY AWARD • SHORTLISTED FOR THE URSULA K. LE GUIN AWARD • SHORTLISTED FOR THE IGNYTE AWARD \nONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Oprah Daily\, Vulture\, Polygon\, She Reads\, Gizmodo\, Kirkus Reviews\, The Quill to Live \nThe people suffer under the centuries-long rule of the Moon Throne. The royal family—the despotic emperor and his monstrous sons\, the Three Terrors—hold the countryside in their choking grip. They bleed the land and oppress the citizens with the frightful powers they inherited from the god locked under their palace. \nBut that god cannot be contained forever. \nWith the aid of Jun\, a guard broken by his guilt-stricken past\, and Keema\, an outcast fighting for his future\, the god escapes from her royal captivity and flees from her own children\, the triplet Terrors who would drag her back to her unholy prison. And so it is that she embarks with her young companions on a five-day pilgrimage in search of freedom—and a way to end the Moon Throne forever. The journey ahead will be more dangerous than any of them could have imagined. \nBoth a sweeping adventure story and an intimate exploration of identity\, legacy\, and belonging\, The Spear Cuts Through Water is an ambitious and profound saga that will transport and transform you—and is like nothing you’ve ever read before.
